English as an additional language or dialect

​Children new to English receive extra help as they learn skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. In particular they are helped with:

  • the English alphabet and the sound or phonetic system of written English
  • spoken English skills, including vocabulary, pronunciation and conversation
  • beginning reading and writing skills
  • essential words and ideas in Mathematics and other learning areas

After children have mastered the basics of English they are helped with:

  • grammar rules
  • understanding more complex language in spoken and written English
  • reading, writing and oral tasks, including practise for assessment pieces

The Aims of the EALD Program

It is intended that the EALD program will promote:
  • a sense of being supported as a student adjusts to the new challenges of an English speaking environment
  • achievement in the classroom in all areas of curriculum learning
  • a sense of pride and value in the students home language and culture
  • intercultural understanding and acceptance
  • communication between the family and school

Who is supported?

Children who speak a language other than English and who have a parent born in a non-English speaking country.

How long are children supported?

For three years, beginning mid-year in Prep, or for three years from their first arrival in Australia.
