Children new to English receive extra help as they learn skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. In particular they are helped with:
the English alphabet and the sound or phonetic system of written English
spoken English skills, including vocabulary, pronunciation and conversation
beginning reading and writing skills
essential words and ideas in Mathematics and other learning areas
After children have mastered the basics of English they are helped with:
grammar rules
understanding more complex language in spoken and written English
reading, writing and oral tasks, including practise for assessment pieces
The Aims of the EALD Program
It is intended that the EALD program will promote:
- a sense of being supported as a student adjusts to the new challenges of an English speaking environment
- achievement in the classroom in all areas of curriculum learning
- a sense of pride and value in the students home language and culture
- intercultural understanding and acceptance
- communication between the family and school
Who is supported?
Children who speak a language other than English and who have a parent born in a non-English speaking country.
How long are children supported?
For three years, beginning mid-year in Prep, or for three years from their first arrival in Australia.
