What support is given?

Children new to English receive extra help as they learn skills in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. In particular they are helped with:

  • The English alphabet and the sound or phonetic system of written English
  • Spoken English skills, including vocabulary, pronunciation and conversation
  • Beginning reading and writing skills
  • Essential words and ideas in Mathematics and other learning areas

After children have mastered the basics of English they are helped with:

  • Grammar rules
  • Understanding more complex language in spoken and written English
  • Reading, Writing and Oral tasks, including practise for assessment pieces.

Who is supported?

Children who speak a language other than English and who have a parent born in a non-English speaking country

How long are children supported?

For three years, beginning mid-year in Prep, or for three years from their first arrival in Australia

Where does EAL/D support take place?

Sometimes in a quiet area away from the classroom and sometimes within the classroom.  Students are supported individually or in a small group.
